World War II veteran Jim Stark, age 102, salutes a fellow veteran at the Mighty Eighth Air Force Remembrance Ceremony at La Fiere Bridge, France, June 4, 2026. Stark, who enlisted as an aviation cadet on his 18th birthday, flew P-38 Lightning combat missions over Europe with the 474th Fighter Group. During the war, he provided critical aerial coverage over the Remagen Bridge, escorted Allied bombers, and survived bailing out of a burning aircraft before being held as a prisoner of war. Following his WWII service, Stark flew F-80s and F-100s with the New Mexico Air National Guard and spent nearly 40 years as an aeronautical engineer at Sandia National Labs.
