A U.S. Army soldier assigned to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) stands at attention while performing sentinel duty at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. The sentinel, wearing a dark wool overcoat and white gloves, holds a ceremonial M14 rifle while standing on the black mat in front of the marble tomb. The guard maintains the post 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a tradition that has continued uninterrupted since 1937.
