U.S. Army retired Capt. Jack Wingate, a veteran of the 82nd Airborne Division, suits up for an airborne jump before a D-Day commemoration event in Carentan-les-Marais, France, June 3, 2026. Wingate is 90 years old and enlisted in the Army in 1953. The event highlighted the service and sacrifice of paratroopers during airborne operations in World War II. From June 2-7, 2026, more than 600 U.S. Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Guardians and Airmen from roughly 17 units historically linked to D-Day made up Joint Task Force 82 and participated in over 90 commemorative events throughout the Normandy Region.
