An MH-60R Seahawk helicopter assigned to Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 60 (HSM-60) takes off from the flight deck of the Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS Cooperstown (LCS 23) to conduct aerial patrol operations while underway in the Atlantic Ocean, May 19, 2026. U.S. Navy aviation assets are deployed under U.S. Northern Command’s maritime interdiction missions to prevent the flow of illegal drugs and other illicit activities. U.S. Northern Command is working side-by-side with the Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection within narrowly defined authorities to provide unique military capabilities to protect the territorial integrity of the U.S. southern border.
