Sailors from across the U.S. Navy guided and ballistic missile submarine force and representatives from Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) spruced up the USS Pampanito Museum and Memorial in San Francisco for the site’s Lost Boat Ceremony on May 22, 2026. Service members “dressed” the Balao-class WWII submarine with bunting and flags, landscaped the area, and cleaned the memorial in preparation of the ceremony held on Memorial Day.
“By connecting the history of this WWII submarine to the modern nuclear Navy that these Sailors are a part of creates a closer connection between the public and the military,” said Mr. Emilio Mackie, the USS Pampanito ship manager.
This year celebrates 50 years since the USS Pampanito was acquired by the San Francisco Maritime National Park Association. Since being acquired, the boat has gone under meticulous restoration and made its public depot in 1982. The Pampanito is the sole publicly accessible World War II submarine on the West Coast and highlights maritime heritage.
Sailors and PAE SSP representatives conducted this community relations effort as a part of PAE SSP’s Reverse Strategic Weapon System (SWS) Week, which brings submariners from the fleet out to PAE SSP’s program management office detachments to connect them directly with the government and industry partners that help design, develop, and produce the Navy’s Trident II D5 SWS.
