NEWPORT, R.I.--- U.S. Navy Adm. Steve Koehler, commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet, delivers remarks to students, staff and faculty at the U.S. Naval War College (NWC) after receiving the college’s Distinguished Graduate Leadership Award (DGLA) onboard Naval Station Newport, May 13, 2026. The DGLA, first presented in 1996, recognizes the accomplishments of alumni who have used their NWC education as a springboard to positions of senior leadership and prominence in the field of national security. The U.S. Pacific Fleet delivers combat-ready naval forces to defend the homeland and U.S. interests throughout the region, provide credible deterrence, and strengthen U.S. alliances and partnerships to ensure a secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific. Established in 1884, NWC informs today’s decision-makers and educates tomorrow’s leaders by providing educational experiences and learning opportunities that develop their ability to hedge aggressively, innovate continuously, fight distributively, delegate confidently, and command with clarity within complex battlespaces.
