Andrea Farmer, an archaeologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District, poses April 2, 2026, with cannons and other artifacts recovered from the Savannah River. The artifacts were discovered in 2021 during the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project and later transported to the Conservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M University for preservation. Researchers believe the items originated from HMS Savannah, which the British scuttled in 1779 to block French ships from sailing upriver to aid American forces during the American Revolutionary War. The conservation process is complete, and the artifacts are scheduled to return to Savannah for display at the Savannah History Museum.
