Marine and civilian personnel waved on veteran motorcycle riders with salutes and American flags along Route 66/Joseph L. Boll during their annual Run for the Wall ride from California to the Vietnam Memorial wall in DC aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California, May 13. These riders run various routes and joint the convoy along the way so by the time they meet at the Wall, there are thousands to remember those that can't ride for themselves by Memorial Day.
A message from Sergeant Major Mario Virto, base sergeant major, stated:
“In the Marine Corps, we talk a lot about legacy, tradition, and taking care of our own. This event was a living demonstration of those values. The riders who came through our base are riding for a cause that strikes at the very heart of the warfighter's ethos: the sacred promise that we will never forget our Killed in Action, and we will never stop advocating for a full accounting of our Prisoners of War and Missing in Action (POW/MIA). By lining that route as one unified base family, you sent a clear message to those nearly 200 riders—and to the 12th Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps, Harold G. Overstreet—that their brothers and sisters still in the fight stand firmly behind them. You helped provide a moment of healing and respect for veterans who have sacrificed deeply for our nation.”
