American scientist Frank Wattendorf, center, joins other Air Force and Arnold Engineering Development Center officials in a tour of the center in 1965. Wattendorf is considered one of the founding fathers of AEDC. His Trans-Atlantic Memo, written following a 1945 survey of captured German test facilities with other members of the Scientific Advisory Group, was the first recommendation of a facility such as AEDC. Also pictured, from left, are retired Maj. Gen. Franklin O. Carroll, R.M. Williams, Gen. Bernard Schriever and then-AEDC Commander Brig. Gen. Lee Gossick. (U.S. Air Force photo)
