Seawater swirls around rocks as USS Benfold (DDG 65) enters the harbor at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division in California for a recent Combat Systems Assessment Team event. The ship is named after Edward Clyde Benfold, a U.S. Navy hospital corpsman who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroism during the Korean War. Under intense fire, he grabbed two hand grenades that had been tossed into a crater where two Marines were positioned. With a grenade in each hand, Benfold jumped from the crater and hurled himself at advancing enemy soldiers, pushing the grenades into their chests and killing them. His actions saved the Marines but cost him his own life. (U.S. Navy photo by Eric Parsons)
