Col. Tommy James, 117th Maintenance Group commander, retires after 42 years of service to the United States and to the state of Alabama, during a ceremony May 2, 2026, Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base, Birmingham, Ala. James enlisted in 1984 as a Petroleum, Oils, and Lubricants Airman and spent his first 18 months of service at Grand Forks Air Force Base, North Dakota before becoming a member of the Alabama Air National Guard where he served with the 187th Fighter Wing, the Alabama National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters, and the 117th Air Refueling Wing.
