Gen. Bernard Schriever, commander of the Air Force Systems Command, center, speaks with other attendees of a 1963 dinner at Arnold Engineering Development Center during which the University of Tennessee Space Institute was discussed. The first UTSI classes were held Sept. 24, 1964, at AEDC in offices provided by the Air Force as UTSI was constructed. In the years leading up to the establishment of UTSI, a program was in place through which the University of Tennessee would award graduate degrees to engineers at AEDC. Pictured with Schriever, from left, are former State Sen. Ewing Threet, Arnold Research Organization Director of Engineering Bernhard Goethert, University of Tennessee President Andrew Holt, AEDC Commander Maj. Gen. William L. Rogers, Tennessee Lt. Gov. James Bomar and University of Tennessee Graduate Schools Dean A.A. Smith. (U.S. Air Force photo)
