The Space Shuttle Columbia lands on the flat expanse of gypsum lake beds at Northrup Strip, now White Sands Space Harbor, on March 30, 1982. Crewed by Commander Jack R. Lousma and Pilot C. Gordon Fullerton, the STS-3 mission carried a suite of scientific instruments for its eight day mission. As the Columbia touched down at Northrup Strip, it was followed by two chase planes for observation. The Columbia was the first and last shuttle to land at WSSH.
