Members of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency explain the excavation process to members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services, U.S. government officials, and Vietnamese journalists during a recovery operation in Vietnam, April 7, 2026. Soil from excavation units is transferred to screening stations where U.S. personnel and Vietnamese citizens search for life support and material evidence and possible remains. DPAA’s humanitarian mission has a significant role in the Indo-Pacific region and around the world. There are approximately 1,566 unaccounted for U.S. personnel from the Vietnam War.
