U.S. Army Soldiers assigned to U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton, N.Y., and U.S. Marines with the 6th Communication Battalion, headquartered at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, N.Y., remove debris from the historic Denyse Wharf in Brooklyn, March 10, 2026.
The joint-service cleanup strengthens esprit de corps and supports preparations for Sail4th250, a major maritime celebration scheduled for July 4, 2026, that will bring tall ships and military vessels through the Verrazzano Narrows past Fort Hamilton.
Sail4th250 serves as the maritime centerpiece of the national America250 commemoration marking the United States’ 250th anniversary, featuring a multi-city tour of international tall ships and naval vessels visiting historic ports along the East Coast.
Originally an 18th century ferry landing, Denyse Wharf gained historical significance as the site where British forces landed on Aug. 22, 1776, initiating the Battle of Brooklyn. The wharf’s remains are visible today from the Bay Ridge Promenade, and both the site and adjacent Fort Hamilton are recognized on the New York State Revolutionary War Trail.
