Volunteers with Medical Department Activity-Alaska work to remove snow from a barracks parking lot near Bassett Army Community Hospital on Feb. 27, 2026. Nearly 100 staff members volunteered to clear parking lots after about three feet of snow fell on Fort Wainwright in less than a week, followed by temperatures plunging to minus 30. Consecutive heavy storms made it nearly impossible for the Department of Public Works or the hospital’s facilities team to keep pace with snow removal.
