Pvt. 1st Class Abdoulhakim Abdi, a petroleum supply specialist with the 133rd Engineers Forward Support Company, waits for a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation worker to fill the dump truck with snow for removal Feb. 28, 2026. Once filled, Abdi transported the snow to an empty parking lot to melt. He, along with 26 other Maine National Guard Soldiers, was deployed on state active-duty orders to Rhode Island in support snow removal relief efforts after winter storm Hernando dropped record breaking snowfall across the state. The support for this mission came at the request of Rhode Island through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, a mutual aid agreement that enables states to support one another during emergencies and natural disasters.
