U.S. Air Force Airmen assigned to the 377th Maintenance Squadron load Expended Small Arm Cartridge Casings (ESACCs) onto a tow tractor at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, March 10, 2026. This inspection ensures all rounds are free of explosive material before being sealed for turn-in to a local recycling center. This step is a vital part of a new, organic base process developed by the 377th MXS to manage the destruction of non-serviceable brass. Once a weight of 2,500 lbs is reached, the ESACCs are transported off-base where Airmen witness their destruction to receive a Certificate of Destruction, as the turn-in of serviceable casings is strictly prohibited. The 377th MXS Munitions Materiel Section manages a $17M arsenal and projects this recycling initiative will generate an annual profit of $60,000 for the 377th Air Base Wing Qualified Recycling Program (QRP).
