U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crews install a containment system within and surrounding the Rock Run culvert near the Potomac Interceptor collapse site in Washington, D.C., on Mar. 10, 2026. The containment system enables crews to clean the interior of the historic structure using National Park Service-approved preservation techniques. Water that collects below the culvert will be pumped through the existing C&O Canal bypass, thereby avoiding the adjacent tributary to the Potomac River, per Maryland Department of the Environment guidance.
