Massachusetts State Defense Force Chaplain (Capt.) John Smegal recites the blessing over the communion chalice during the Catholic Mass at Barnes Air National Guard Base, Massachusetts, March 8, 2026. The Chaplain offered the Mass in remembrance of those service members who have lost their lives while performing their military duties. Prior to commissioning into the MSDF on Dec. 7, 2023, Chaplain Smegal served a congregation in Amherst, Mass., from 1980 until his retirement. “I don’t think people understand the sacrifices of the family and all the men and women around the world defending our way of life,” Chaplain Smegal said. “I felt called to continue serving after retiring.” Various services offered upon request, include; baptism, marriage, confession, communion, prayers at change of commands and other events for the base and its members.
