JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM – Jim Neuman, Navy Region Hawaii historian, shares the history of the U.S. Navy Band in Hawaii during an interview in Bloch Arena on Joint Base Peral Harbor-Hickam with Sailors assigned to the U.S. Navy Band, March 5, 2026. The U.S. Navy Band is in Hawaii to document the history and heritage of U.S. Navy music and the musician rating. The Navy Band has been capturing footage in preparation for the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the musician rating. Bloch Arena was the site of the Battle of Music band competition. On Dec. 6, 1941, the bands of the USS Pennsylvania (BB-38) and USS Tennessee (BB-43) beat out other bands for the opportunity to face off with the USS Arizona (BB-39) and the Marine Corps Barracks bands on Dec. 20. Tragically, the entire 21-member USS Arizona band was killed on Dec. 7, 1941, at their battle stations.
