U.S. sailors assigned to the guided missile destroyer USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) prepare to embark with Tanzanian sailors before starting a non-compliant boarding scenario aboard the Gonzalez June 6, 2013, in the Indian Ocean as part of a bilateral training event to exchange best practices and exercise maritime interdiction techniques. The joint training was conducted to enhance the Tanzanian navy's proficiencies in boarding vessels and strengthen regional maritime security while also serving to build on the cooperative ties between U.S. and Tanzanian maritime forces. The Gonzalez, homeported in Norfolk, Va., was on a scheduled deployment supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa area of responsibility.
