A large quadcopter unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) launches from the runway at the Portuguese Navy Operational Experimentation Center in Troia, Portugal, on Sept. 25 as observers look on. The quadcopter operated during the 2025 Robotic Experimentation and Prototyping with Maritime Unmanned Systems (REPMUS) exercise, which Portugal hosted for NATO countries. Several UAVs worked in unison with unmanned surface and underwater vessels to demonstrate their capabilities. Alan Jaeger, acting chief technology officer at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division and U.S. head of delegation to the NATO Joint Capability Group for Maritime Unmanned Systems, helped coordinate U.S. activities in REPMUS.
