During the Senior Logisticians Panel at the DoW Maintenance Symposium, Maj. Gen. Keith D. Reventlow, commanding general, Marine Corps Logistics Command, joined senior leadership from across the services and supporting agencies.
The conversation built on opening remarks by Leigh E. Method, performing the duties of Acting Assistant Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment, who highlighted both the centrality and complexity of modern logistics in contested environments.
“Logistics has long been described as the backbone of operational success, yet its complexity is often underestimated,” Method said. “It’s not just about moving supplies from point A to point B—it’s about ensuring every link in the logistics kill chain functions seamlessly under the most demanding conditions, even as adversaries actively target our sustainment networks.”
Building on that framework, panelists examined how sustainment operations serve as both a readiness engine and a strategic deterrent. Reventlow emphasized that defending the kill chain from a logistics perspective extends well beyond initial fielding.
“From a logistics perspective, the kill chain doesn’t end with fielding a weapon system,” Reventlow said. “Sustainment decisions, made either intentionally or unintentionally early in weapon system development, affect our ability to maintain it, and you live with those choices forever. When there are gaps in the handoff between system sustainment and force sustainment, we introduce variability in demand and forecasting, which directly impacts readiness at the tactical level. Early decisions and requirements made during development and acquisition drive readiness and availability. In a contested environment, that lack of a clear sustainment picture becomes one of the most consequential challenges to maintaining the kill chain.”
Panelists agreed that defending the logistics kill chain requires an integrated, joint approach—grounded in Total Life Cycle Management, informed forecasting, and resilient sustainment networks, to ensure forces can operate through disruption and maintain operational advantage in the most demanding environments.
