Michael Caldwell, serving as a quality assurance (QA) specialist Dave Warneke, logistic specialist, and Reilly Frable, a QA from U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District, were pre-staged at Greencastle, Pennsylvania ahead of Winter Storm 2026, Jan. 24, 2026.
In preparation for the January 2026 Winter Storm, USACE received a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) mission assignment to provide temporary emergency power if needed. Under that mission assignment USACE prepositioned five planning and response teams (PRTs), comprised of highly qualified contractors, USACE personnel, Soldiers from the 249th Engineer Battalion (Prime Power), and 180 generators to locations within the Southeast and East Coast of the United States. Teams arrived at Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Camp Mindon, Louisiana; and Fort Lee, Virginia prior to the storm’s impacts to best respond to the needs of the community.
Through its FEMA-assigned mission, USACE is working closely with the state to identify the facilities that are eligible and require temporary emergency power so, if needed, communities can get critical infrastructure such as hospitals, fire stations, warming centers, or other state-run medical care centers back online as quickly as possible.
