Builder 3rd Class Austin Maddox (right) with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 3, known as Seabees, receives a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal from Capt. Tony Holmes, commanding officer of Naval Surface Warfare Center, Port Hueneme Division, onboard Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) in Port Hueneme, California, on Jan. 12. Maddox was recognized for rescuing an injured surfer at Silver Strand Beach, adjacent to NBVC, on Nov. 22. Maddox was surfing at Silver Strand when he witnessed a collision between two other surfers that left one of them unconscious. Maddox and another surfer brought the injured person to shore, and Maddox retrieved a first aid kit from his vehicle. He applied and maintained pressure to the injured surfer’s wound while directing other bystanders in first aid procedures until the fire department arrived. (U.S. Navy photo by Esthela McKenzie)
