Nicole Bozic performs Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCR) on samples as part of the SeptiBurnAlert research project on January 20, 2026. Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death among patients with burn injury in the United States, but WRAIR’s Integrated Systems Biology (ISB) is leading the charge to save lives. With collaborators at the Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center, the development of SeptiBurnAlert has reduced the time to diagnose sepsis by more than three days. A single drop of blood from patients admitted to burn ICU can predict the onset of sepsis. This project integrated blood genomics with an AI-empowered algorithm to customize interventions and enhance precision medication. (US Army photo by Mike Walters/ Released)
