U.S. policy for Antarctica has developed consistently over the years. The four principles the policy is based on are: the U.S. recognizes no foreign territorial claims in Antarctica; the U.S. reserves the right to participate in any future uses of the region; Antarctica shall be used for peaceful purposes only; and there shall be free access for scientific investigation and other peaceful pursuits.
