U.S. Army soldiers with 40th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), assigned to Joint Task Force-Southern Border (JTF-SB), load onto a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter during a National Defense Area (NDA) signage emplacement operation in Imperial County, Calif., Jan 6, 2026. During the operation, the Blackhawk inserted soldiers with NDA signs and tools to place signs in the fifth designated NDA along the southern border. JTF-SB executes full-scale, agile, and all-domain operations in support of U.S. Customs and Border Protection to protect the territorial integrity of the United States and achieve 100% operational control of the southern border.
