White oak acorns collected from the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest are sorted and processed through a water float in Macon, Georgia, on Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 5–6, 2026. The float test is used to assess acorn viability before seeds are transported for sowing as part of a long-term hardwood restoration effort. (USDA Forest Service photo by Mike Hennigan)
