The transfer cases containing the remains of Staff Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar and Staff Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard rest on transfer case stands on the flight line as honor guard members, Iowa National Guard leaders, Iowa state leaders and other service members stand at attention during an honorable transfer ceremony at Des Moines International Airport, Dec. 24, 2025. Torres-Tovar, assigned to 1st Squadron, 113th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division, Iowa Army National Guard, was killed Dec. 13, 2025, while conducting counterterrorism operations in Syria. Howard, assigned to the same unit, was killed in the same incident. Their remains were escorted throughout the journey home by fellow Iowa National Guard service members.
