Ski With A Ranger program is a free guided tour managed by the USDA Forest Service and partnered with a local ski resort. Tom Schaefer, a 11-year volunteer, provides a multi-stop, mostly-scripted, audio and visual, guided tour that covers the relationship between the resort and the federal land management agency, history of the region, geological and landscape identifiers, tree and wildlife knowledge, water conservation, burn scars and wildfire prevention measures, and everything in between. Debbie and Mark Jarman, a couple from Sydney, Australia, joined Tom for the 10 a.m. tour while Ren Chamarro, a volunteer and California Conservation Corps employee, shadowed Tom for the day to eventually run a tour by herself. Heavenly Ski Resort, located in South Lake Tahoe, and the USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Pacific Southwest Region, have partnered together on this program for more than 10 years. The SWAR is offered at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. mostly on Friday's but always check with both partners. Feb. 18, 2023. (USDA Forest Service photo by Paul Wade)
