U.S. Army Paratroopers assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade participate in the Chaplain Watters Physical Training Competition at Caserma Del Din, Italy, Sept. 19, 2025. The event honored Chaplain (Maj.) Charles J. Watters, a Medal of Honor recipient who served with the 173rd in Vietnam and was killed in action during the Battle of Dak To on Nov. 19, 1967. The competition paid tribute to his courage, sacrifice, and dedication to supporting wounded Paratroopers under fire.
The 173rd Airborne Brigade is the U.S. Army's Contingency Response Force in Europe, providing rapidly deployable forces to the U.S. European, African, and Central Command areas of responsibility. Forward deployed across Italy and Germany, the brigade routinely trains alongside NATO allies and partners to build partnerships and strengthen the alliance.
