A Sailor from the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard presents the National Flag to the family of U.S. Navy Capt. Thomas E. Scheurich during his funeral at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia, Nov. 14, 2025. Scheurich was piloting an A-6A Intruder assigned to Attack Squadron THREE FIVE, Air Wing 9, USS Enterprise, Task Force 77, 7th Fleet during a night strike mission over northern Vietnam. On March 1, 1968, the aircraft lost radio contact and was never heard from again. After an air search failed to locate Scheurich or the aircraft, he was declared missing in action. On April 28, 1978, the Navy reported Scheurich as Killed in Action and he was posthumously promoted to the rank of Captain. Scheurich was accounted for by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency on April 23, 2025 and returned to his family for burial with full military honors. (U.S. Army photo by Sgt. Ashleigh Maxwell).
