A P-38 Lightning takes off from the flight line during the 2025 Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Air Show in San Diego, Sept. 26, 2025. Introduced to service in 1941, the P-38 served as a long-range escort, interceptor and reconnaissance aircraft throughout World War II and became one of the most versatile fighters of its era. The aircraft is flown by Steven Hinton, an Air Force Heritage Flight program pilot and eight-time Reno Air Races Unlimited Gold Champion who holds the world speed record for a piston-powered aircraft at 531.53 mph. The Heritage Flight program pairs historic warbirds with modern Air Force fighters to honor the legacy of American airpower and inspire future generations of Airmen.
