Lt. Cmdr. James Gorman, an obstetrician assigned to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton in north San Diego County, Calif., speaks to Sailors assembled to celebrate the 250th Birthday of the U.S. Navy aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton on the morning of Oct. 9, 2025. Gorman was invited to speak to the Sailors by Capt. Virginia Damin, commander of Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Camp Pendleton during her closing remarks. Although it was Gorman’s first Navy Birthday ceremony, he had just participated as the oldest Sailor present having joined the Navy in his 60s following 33 years of private practice. For 250 years, Navy Medicine – represented by more than 44,000 highly-trained military and civilian healthcare professionals – has delivered quality healthcare and enduring expeditionary medical support to the warfighter on, below, and above the sea, and ashore.
