U.S. Army Sgt. Benjamin Kovacic, center, and fellow Ohio National Guard Soldiers pose for a photo after responding to an incident while on patrol in support of the D.C. Safe and Beautiful mission in Washington, D.C., Oct. 29, 2025. While exiting a Metro station near a school dismissal area, Kovacic saw an adolescent male on the ground who appeared injured. “When I approached him, I could see that he was injured,” Kovacic said. “He was potentially struck during an altercation that spilled over from school. When I put gloves on and rendered aid, there was a deep laceration on his head and he was spilling a good amount of blood.” The Soldiers notified civilian authorities, who quickly responded and provided additional medical assistance.
