A plain bison herd roams the hills while U.S. Marines with Charlie Company, 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, prepare to participate in a combat readiness evaluation at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Oct. 8, 2025. The non-native wild herd of plain bison currently living on the installation descended from 14 founding animals donated by the San Diego Zoo that were released between 1973 and 1979. The combat readiness evaluation is a formal test based on mission essential tasks that evaluates the combat readiness of Marine units. (U.S. Marine Corps photo by Sgt. Kyle Chan)
