An event pamphlet and coaster are on display during the U.S. Air Force 78th Birthday Ball at the IP Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, Sept. 20, 2025. The U.S. Air Force branch was formed on September 18, 1947 with the signing of the National Security Act by President Truman. The military had already established a series of designations prior to the official branch being formed and had purchased its first aircraft in 1909, but the 1947 Act established the Air Force as an independent service, equal to the Army and Navy.
