The 15th Space Surveillance Squadron patch is shown on Sept. 16, 2025.
The platinum represents the men and women of Space Operations Command who faithfully carry out the Space Force mission. The dragon symbolizes valiance, perseverance and protection, and shows that the 15th SPSS is one head of the three-headed dragon that represents the Air Force Research Laboratory Space Electro-Optics Division. The constellation Scorpius highlights the Squadron’s surveillance capabilities within the space domain, and also contains the Hawaiian god Maui’s hook, paying homage to the squadron’s location. The red polestar signifies the red star “Antares,” which emphasizes the unit’s determination and dedication to target and deter adversaries. The numeral “15” signifies the squadron’s roots as AFRL detachment 15.
The 15th SPSS serves as the U.S. Space Force’s center of excellence for ground-based optical space domain awareness, combining operations and research to develop, deliver and operate advanced SDA capabilities in support of warfighter needs. It is a uniquely blended unit comprised of research personnel from the AFRL and operational personnel, allowing operators to benefit from the cutting-edge science and technology produced by developers, and for the developers to solve the most present challenges identified by the operators.
