Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman provides the keynote address during the 2025 Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies conference in Maui, Hawaii, Sept. 17, 2025. The AMOS conference brings together experts from government, academia, industry and military to share knowledge, foster collaboration and discuss the technical and policy challenges of ensuring a safe and sustainable space environment.
Saltzman’s remarks highlighted partnerships, innovation and the critical role Hawaii plays in space domain awareness.
“The whole SDA ecosystem– government, industry, allies, partners and all the smarts and capability they offer– are fusing together all the required elements we need to avoid operational surprise to deter, protect, defend and, if need be, win in space,” said Saltzman.
He also noted that SDA is critical to all space efforts: “Awareness in the domain is foundational to every other effort in space. Space domain awareness is truly a team sport, one critically reliant on technology as a force enabler that must be supported by commercial collaboration, integrated training and coalition operations.”
The island of Maui is home to the Maui Space Surveillance Complex, which is operated by the 15th Space Surveillance Squadron, the U.S. Space Force’s center of excellence for ground-based optical space domain awareness, combining operations and research to develop, deliver and operate advanced SDA capabilities in support of warfighter needs. The 15th SPSS is a uniquely blended unit comprised of research personnel from the Air Force Research Laboratory and operational personnel, allowing operators to benefit from the cutting-edge science and technology produced by developers, and for the developers to solve the most present challenges identified by the operators.
