This is a Smith- Peterson nail mounted on a Thornton Plate. The nail was invented in 1925 by Marius Smith- Peterson (1886–1953) of Massachusetts General Hospital to repair a fractured hip. The plate was developed in 1937, by Lawson Thornton (1885-1957) to hold the nail in the femur bone. It was manufactured by Zimmer, Inc in the late 20th Century. The combination nail and plate resulted in 70% of the cases healing compared with 50% using the nail alone. [M-129.11316]
