This photo shows the Spruance-class Destroyer, USS Comte De Grasse (DD 974) at anchor on the York River, circa October 1981. This photo was captured from NWS Yorktown. At the time, the destroyer visited the Yorktown, Virginia area to support various COMREL events.
Comte De Grasse was laid down on April 4, 1975 in Pascagoula, Mississippi and built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries. She was launched on March 26, 1976 and commissioned on August 5, 1978 with Commander Frank J. Lugo, USN in command. The warship was under the command of Commander Philip A. Dur, USN at the time of this photo; and is pictured with a Kaman SH-2F Seasprite helicoper on her aft deck.
