An aerial ignition academy was hosted by the Forest Service and CAL FIRE near Hollister, CA, May 22, 2024 and also included the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Mangement and Fish and Wildlife service.

Suppressing wildfire and reducing wildfire risk is an interagency effort and aerial ignition can be a useful tool for wildland firefighters and land managers.

Aerial ignition is the practice of dropping small spheres from an aircraft or drone. These spheres are plastic balls filled with a chemical called potassium permanganate that causes them to ignite about 10 seconds after being injected with glycol.
