America’s first dry dock is still going at America’s Shipyard! Several Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) shops and codes banded together to perform a 10-year required inspection of Dry Dock 1’s caisson. Caissons create a sealed barrier between the river and NNSY’s dry docks, allowing a wide variety of required work to be performed on ships while in dock. This inspection required drydocking the caisson itself to perform a thorough assessment using JLGs. In use since June 1833, Dry Dock 1 is also the oldest existing structure in the shipyard and was designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1978.
