U.S. Army National Guard Sgt. 1st Class Eric Furbee, assigned to Charlie Company, 1-168th General Support Aviation Battalion, Washington Army National Guard, sets up field air traffic control equipment in support of a medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) mission during Northern Strike 25-2 at Camp Grayling, Michigan, Aug. 5, 2025. Field air traffic controllers ensure the safe and efficient coordination of aircraft in dynamic environments, enabling rapid air support, medical evacuations, resupply missions, and troop movements. Their role is vital to the success of operations and training exercises like Northern Strike, enhancing realism, readiness, and multinational interoperability. Northern Strike is a National Guard Bureau sponsored, multi-component, multinational exercise designed to build readiness and enhance interoperability with allied forces to fight and win. Northern Strike 25-2, Michigan’s largest and longest exercise designed to validate readiness of the joint reserve force, is held Aug. 2 to 16, 2025 at the National All-Domain Warfighting Center.
