On 21 July, the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research-Europe-Middle East conducted a Staff Ride to Kojori Memorial and Didgori Memorial with Dr. Archil Gagnidze, WRAIR-EME’s Cultural Liaison as the lead. The visit began at the Kojori Memorial, which honors the Georgian cadets and defenders of Tbilisi during the Soviet occupation in February 1921. Participants explored themes of courage, national identity, and asymmetric warfare. Maro Makashvili, a young volunteer nurse, who was killed in action, became a national symbol of courage and sacrifice and her legacy continues through the Maro Makashvili Rehabilitation Center, which serves Georgian wounded service members and veterans. The second site visited was the Didgori Memorial, site of the decisive 1121 battle led by King David IV (David the Builder) against a vastly superior Seljuk force. Discussions focused on King David’s use of terrain, surprise, and morale to overcome numerical disadvantage. The staff ride enriched WRAIR-EME team’s understanding of key episodes in Georgian military history.
