Sgt. Sid Smith IV plays the drums as part of the 144th Army Band's "Big Band" ensemble. The Illinois Army National Guard's 144th Army Band, which has responded to flood duty, returned to the banks of the Mississippi performing July 3 at the Alton Amphitheater for the community's Independence Day celebration. On July 4, 1993, the Illinois National Guard was activated for the Great Flood and has responded to floods along the Mississippi and many other areas multiple times since.
