Sgt. Varetta Barnes of the 354th Civil Affairs Brigade, Riverdale, Md., came to the "Salute to Heroes" inaugural ball hoping to get close to the president. She wanted to present him a booklet of all the things her unit had accomplished during its tour in Iraq, from helping to re-establish the Baghdad Zoo to organizing a business women's association. She also wanted to show him a newspaper clipping with a photo of the president giving her a warm hug during his surprise visit to Baghdad during Thanksgiving 2003.
