The U.S. Naval Academy's Herndon Monument is surrounded by the plebe class at the start of the traditional climb. The first-year student who makes it to the top of the lard-covered monument replaces the plebe cap there with an upperclassman's hat. Since 2001, academy students have collected and donated the sneakers used in this event to countries such as Kosovo and Afghanistan, where U.S. service members are stationed and can distribute them to the local population.
